I never knew if you were there
to hold my hand through winter's glare
and once again carry me
to a lagoon or deep blue sea
I never knew if you'd be mine
a prospect once so pure divine
or leave me blocking arteries
in a city lined with fewer trees
I never knew if we'd strike gold
or whether dreams would simply fold
beneath the paper thin walls
eroded by our many falls
I never knew if you knew me
in life, in song or poetry
but will cradle that which I may
to meet you on a summer's day.
